Discourse on Alawaka- Alawaka Sutta

On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at the monastery of Dewram Vehera in Sravastri and one morning when He was surveying the whole world He saw with His divine eye that He could be of service to Alawaka Yakkha who was virtuous enough to attain Anagami, the third of the four paths to Nibbana and that eighty four thousand others would attain Nibbana by listening to Dharma that would be delivered to him. There upon the Blessed One went to Alawaka Yakkha’s mansion.

At that time Alawaka Yakkha was not in his mansion having gone to attend an assembly of Yakkhas at Himalayas.  Gandabba yakkha who was watching Alawaka Yakkha’s mansion asked the Blessed One why He had come there. He was highly worried that the Buddha had come in the absence of his master. He wanted to send Buddha away before the arrival of Alawaka. The watcher failed in his attempt. He told the Buddha that Alawaka Yakkha was cruel and aggressive. All those attempts and explanations were in vain. Buddha remained in Alawaka’s mansion unmoved. Alawaka Yakkha who came back to his mansion saw the Buddha and got out burning with anger at the sight of the Buddha in his abode. He too made all the attempts to send the Buddha away from his abode. His attempts were also in vain.  Later on Buddha subjugated Alawaka yakkha and this subjugation is called Alawaka Damanaya.

Thus have I heard: - On one occasion the Blessed One was living in the abode of Alavake Yakkha. Alawake Yakkha was burning with anger. “Get out samana (recluse)”, Alawaka shouted. In reply Buddha said “Yes, my friend I shall do so” and went out of his mansion. Then Alawaka Yakkha asked the Blessed One to get in. The Blessed One got in saying”O my friend I shall do so.” Alawake Yakkha again asked Buddha to get out. Buddha responded once again and got out of Alawake’s mansion saying “yes my friend I shall do so.”
Then again Alawake Yakkha asked the Blessed One to get in and the Blessed One responded and got in saying “Yes my friend I shall do so” Alawake yakkha again gave orders to the Blessed One to get out of his mansion. The Blessed One responded and got out saying “Yes my friend I shall do so.” For the third time Alawake Yakkha asked the Blessed one to get into his mansion. On this occasion too the Blessed One responded and got in saying “Yes my friend I shall do so” Again AlawakeYakkha ordered the Blessed One to get out.  The Blessed one without hesitation responded and got out saying “Yes my friend I shall do so”. Then again Alawake Yakkha issued orders to the Buddha to get in. Blessed One responded and got in saying “Yes my friend I shall do so” Again AlawakeYakkha ordered the Blessed One to get out. On this occasion the Blessed One refused to go away from Alawake yakkha’s abode and said “I am not prepared to go away. I will stay here. You may do anything you wish to do.”

Thereupon Alawake yakkha said “I will ask a question and if you fail to answer that question to my satisfaction I will confuse your mind and cut open your heart and take you from your feet and fling you to the other end of the ocean.”

“Well friend”,  the Blessed One said “I can see no one in the worlds of Devas, Maras, Brahmas or any recluses, brahmanas, deities or humans who could confuse my mind, cut open my heart or take me from my feet and fling me to the other side of the ocean. However, you may ask me the questions.”

Thereupon, Alawake yakkha addressed   the Blessed One in verse form (Gatha),

O1.    “What wealth in this world is most precious for man? Practicing what the man   can achieve happiness? What taste is most delicious? What is the best life that one can live?”

             The blessed One answerd thus:-

02.       “For a man the best wealth is faithful believing. Happiness can be achieved by practicing Dhamma (good moral conduct). Indeed Truth is the most delicious taste and wisely lived life is the best.”

Alawaka yakkha asked another set of questions

03.         “How can one cross the torrential waves? How can one cross the ocean of Sansara (The Ocean of Transmigration)? How can one be purified?”

            The Blessed One answered.

04.       “ One can cross the torrential waves through faithful believing. The Ocean of Sansara can be crossed by being diligent. One can overcome suffering through effort and one can be purified through wisdom (Pragna)”

Alawaka yakkha asked further questions and Buddha answered them all.

05.     “How can one develop Pragna (wisdom)? How can one build wealth? How can one come to be fame? How can one win friendship? And how can one overcome suffering in subsequent lives?”

06.        “One who has faith in Dhamma and possesses the ability to perceive things, one who has the will to hear Dhamma and one who is vigilant attains Nibbana.”

07.         “One who is tactful and energetic and acquires wealth by his own effort gains fame and builds friendship.”

08.       “One who has faith in Dhamma one who is truthful, virtuous, firm and fond of giving, will not grieve hereafter.”

09.       “Nothing is better than truth, restraint, charity and forbearance. They are the greatest reformers of man. If there are better ones ask other sages or Brahmanas.”

10.       “Today I learnt clearly as told by Gautama Buddha the phenomenon- wealth which gives rewards or will to be effective in this life or in the subsequent births. Hence who else should I consult?.  What other Samanas or Brahmanas I should consult?

11         The Omniscient One came to my abode today for my own sake. Thus I came to know where charity will be very fruitful.

12.        I shall now go from village to village and from town to town praising the Supreme Buddha, His Supreme doctrine-Dhamma and His disciples –Sangha. I shall wander reiterating the virtues of the “Triple Gem”

Alawake yakkha said thus to the Blessed One. “O Gautama, your teaching is superb. Like setting upright a vessel which had been kept overturned, like recovering a treasure and like putting in the right direction a person who had lost his way, like lighting an oil lamp to illuminate the surrounding from those with eyes to see the objects. Gautama Buddha has expounded the Dhamma in many ways. I take refuge in venerable Gautama (Buddha), His doctrine,(Dhamma) and His disciples (Sangha). Venerable Gautama please accept me as a disciple as long as I live.”
