After expounding the exceedingly clear Suttas to dispel the fears of celestial beings Bjjangas or seven requisites for attaining the supreme knowledge of a Buddha or factors of Enlightenment were expounded to cure the ills of Maha Kassapa Thera, Maha Moggalyana Thera and the Enlightened One – the Buddha.
Maha Kassapa Thera, Maha Moggalyana Thera and the Blessed One fell ill after inhaling the air polluted by a tree bloomed at the foot of Gijukula rock. Bojjanga or the factors of Enlightenment possess the power and efficacy to heel not only the mental ailments of human beings such as craving, lust and ignorance but also their physical illnesses.
Maha Kassapa Thera once fell ill and was living in Pippili rock cave at Rajagaha Nuwara. One evening the Blessed One visited Pippili rock cave and enquired about the health of Maha Kassapa Thera who was living there. The Blessed One preached Satta Bojjanga Dhamma- the seven factors of Enlightenment or the Supreme knowledge of the Buddha. Maha Kassapa Thera who listened to Satta Bojjanga recovered from that affliction. Maha Kassapa Thera who was following the path to Final Emancipation was glad at heart, approved the utterances of the Blessed One. He was physically well. The affliction of Maha Kassapa Thera disappeared like a drop of water on a Lotus leaf.
On another occasion The Blessed One visited Maha Moggalyana Thera who was afflicted with a disease and expounded Bojjhanga Dhamma – the Factors of Enlightenment. Maha Moggalyana Thera who was pleased with the utterances of the Blessed One recovered from the affliction.
