Discourse on loving –kindness Karaniya Metta Sutta

Ratana sutta or the Jewel discourse was preached to dispel all harm and danger caused by non-humans or evil beings. In the like manner Karaniya Metta sutta or the discourse on loving kindness was preached in a bid to avoid harm caused by tree deities or sylvan deities. Hence Karaniya metta sutta is preceded by Ratana Sutta.

During the time when the Blessed One was residing at Srawastri, Devram Vehera, five hundred Bhikkhus who were frustrated by the futility of the succession of existence or transmigration lived in the jungle in Himalayas having learnt the methods of meditation for gaining merit. By virtue of devoutness of Bhikkhus the sylvan deities had to climb down from their mansions on trees. They moved about here and there in the forest. The deities contemplated on the difficult situation they had to face. “These monks will live here for three months. We cannot live on the ground with our children for such a long period of time. Hence, we should scare the priests by creating  horrible feelings in them by displaying fearful scenes and dreadful noises.” The deities appeared in various forms and disguises such as demons, fiends and hobgoblins making fearful voices and made all efforts to frighten the monks. The Bhikkhus were terrified. They turned pale. Due to the terrible fear they could not concentrate.  However, each one of them kept it a secret confined to individuals. They did not complain or discuss.

One day the Bhikkhus met an elderly monk who counseled them on meditation. Having seen the pale bodies of the monks he made inquiries. The Bhikkhus disclosed the hardships they had to undergo.

The preceptor explained to the Bhikkhus the course of action that could be taken under such circumstances.”The Blessed  One has pointed out that the rainy season sojourn can be observed as ‘Pera Vas’ and ‘Pasu Vas’ and the Bhikkhus who fail to commence the period of rainy season sojourn on Esala Full moon poya day can commence the vas period on the following Full Moon poya day.    Hence, we can find another place and observe Pasu vas as the present place is not comfortable.”

Ultimately they met the Buddha and informed Him everything. The Blessed One with His divine eye saw everything clearly. The Enlightened One showed the best they could do.” There is no better place for the rainy season sojourn. If your wish is not to be scared by tree demons or sylvan deities learn this Pirith –the protective blessings. It will serve you not only as a means of protection but also as a method of meditation for gaining merit. Chant this Metta Sutta – The Discourse on Loving Kindness eight times per month on days when sacred scriptures are read and heard. Engage in religious discussions. Preach the doctrine. Participate and share in merit and benefit. Practice this sutta as a method of meditation for gaining merit. The non humans will not scare you. Deities will be kind and friendly.

The monks went back to the forest and acted according to the instructions of the Blessed One. The deities who were affected by loving kindness shown by the monks allowed them to meditate in peace.

He or she who is skilled in doing what is good and who wishes to attain that state of calm i.e. Nibbana should act thus:-

01.  He or she should be able to practice the austerities for the purpose of destroying passions and to perform religious duties to attain that state of Calm.

02.  He or she should be dexterous, upright and perfectly upright, obedient, gentle and humble. He or she should be contended, easily supportable with few duties. His or her livelihood should be light and simple. He or she should be with controlled senses. He or she should be discreet, not imprudent and not greedily attached to families.

03.  He or she should not commit any slight wrong on account of which other wise men might censure him or her.  He or she should think thus: - “May all beings be happy and secure, may their hearts be wholesome.”

04.   Whatever living beings there may be, feeble or strong, long, stout or medium, short, small or large, seen or unseen, those dwelling far or near, those who are born and those who are to be born - may all beings without exception be happy minded.

05.   Let none deceive another nor despise any person who so ever in any place. In anger or ill will, let him or her not wish any harm to another.

06.   Just as a mother would protect her only child at the risk of her own life, even so let him or her cultivate a boundless heart towards all beings.

07.   Let his or her thoughts of boundless love pervade the whole world – above, below and across without any obstruction, without any hatred and without any enmity.

08.   Whether he or she stands, walks or lies down as long as he or she is awake he or she should develop this mindfulness. This is said to be the Highest Conduct here.

09.   Not falling into error, ill will, self illusion (Sakha Ditti) but being virtuous and endowed with insight he or she discards attachment to sense desires. Of a truth he or she does not come again for conception in a womb.
