The section on Prakthyaveksha is included to show the manner in which the food, robes etc. which keeps this life surviving should be taken thoughtfully without committing sins such as passion and craving.

Prakthyaveksha is the manner in which one should contemplate separately on each item of sivpasaya or the four requisites. Prakthyaveksha should be observed on two occasions, once when sivpasaya (robes, alms, residences and sick diets) are accepted and again when they are used.

  1. Contemplation on each item of sivpasaya should be done separately when accepting and using. The user of robes should consider that they are used to avoid cold and heat, wind and sun and harm caused by gad flies, blood sucking mosquitoes and reptiles and to cover secret parts of the body.The uses of alms should be taken into consideration when they are accepted and before they are consumed.
  2.  Alms are consumed not to gain vigour, pleasure or delight, to play like children, man-hood strength or to gain sensual pleasures or to improve the complexion of the body but for the survival, to quench thirst and hunger and to observe the law enjoining continuance on religious asceticism.“By consuming food I get old pains appeased and I take the limited quantity of food not to suffer new pains.  I take the limited quantity of food knowing that it will maintain my health and help me to live well.”
  3. Lodgings are used to avoid cold and heat, wind and sun, and the harm caused by gad flies, blood sucking mosquitoes and reptiles and to avoid harm caused by climatic changes and the changes in the weather conditions. “I take into consideration separately the uses of lodgings. This will enable me to gain concentration which will pave way to total emancipation.”
  4. Sick diets are used to get instant bodily pains appeased.

 “I take sick diets and medicine taking into consideration the uses separately. Since   health is precious I take sick diets to get instant bodily pains appeased.”
